About Us...

The North Bay Housing Coalition’s mission is to increase affordable housing for individuals with developmental disabilities and their families.  The need for the Coalition’s work is crucial when one considers that persons with disabilities continues to be the poorest people in the nation.  In 2000, there was not a single housing market in the United States where a person with a disability receiving SSI benefits could afford to rent a modest efficiency or one-bedroom unit and 3.5 million non-elderly people with disabilities receiving SSI benefits cannot afford decent housing without some type of government assistance The driving force of the North Bay Housing Coalition is that all persons with developmental disabilities will have the opportunity to create a living arrangement that allows them to live their best possible life. With this hope and desire in mind, the North Bay Housing Coalition began as an informal volunteer group in the early 1990's.  It developed with the strong support of North Bay Regional Center (NBRC) and the Area IV Board, and is now a non-profit 501C3 organization. With grants from NBRC, State Council on Developmental Disabilities, and Department of Developmental Services, the Coalition holds living arrangement workshops, reserved 14 units specifically for persons with developmental disabilities, publishes quarterly newsletters, established and maintains website, and provides individualized, personal consultations with individuals and their support network to discuss future living arrangements.  It also assists qualified individuals move towards homeownership and works closely with local housing authorities and other housing advocates to increase Section 8 Rental Vouchers and to participate in the Homeownership program.

Most recently, it initiated a pooled master special needs trust, the Golden State Pooled Trust, whose primary objective is to provide specialized Special Needs Trusts services to preserve government benefits for the disabled citizens of California
